How does knowing the context of Psalm 51 (cf. 2 Samuel 11-12 and the heading of the psalm) help us in faithfully interpret its meaning and impact on our lives?
What rationalizations do you think David was using in order to dismiss his evil actions? What kinds of excuses have you used to justify your own sinful deeds?
Do you believe in the power of repentance to restore your life? Why is repentance such an important part of the gospel?
One of the key aspects of confessing sin is not to shift blame onto others. Why do we find it so hard to take full responsibility for hurting others with our words and actions?
In Psalm 51:5 David says, "Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me." What does this verse reveal about David's new awareness of the depth of his sinfulness? Was what he did really a freak event in the history of his life or in character with who he has always been?
